Blood Brothers, written by the legendary Willy Russell (Shirley Valentine and Educating Rita) is a heart wrenching show set in Liverpool. Having been in the West End continuous since 1988 this really is a classic tale which if you haven't seen, really should. There is now a national tour running parallel to London.
The story focuses around the two brothers Mickey and Eddie, separated at birth because the mother (Mrs Johnstone) already with too many kids can not afford to keep them both. She gives one of them to her employer (Mrs Lyons) on the understanding that she can see the child every day while at work. Mrs Lyons becomes uneasy about the time Mrs J spends fussing over the child so she sacks her and pays her off. She tells Mrs J that if they ever find out that they are twins they will both immediately die. The story then follows the lives of the two children who meet up and despite the mothers best attempts to keep them apart they continue to do so. They become best of friends along with Linda getting up to all sorts of mischief. We watch the three as they grow up into adulthood where times get hard and the brothers drift apart. Mickey marries Linda with Eddie pushing his feelings aside to allow his friends to pursue their relationship. Mickey is jailed for his part in a robbery and becomes Dependant on Anti-Depressants. When released, Linda tries to help him get off the drugs. While Mickey is at work Linda confides in Eddie for support. Mrs L sees how close they are getting and goes to Mickey, Still struggling with his battle with the pills he goes on the rampage in search of Eddie. He finds and confronts Eddie before Mrs J bursts in and reveals the secret of the past. The play ends in such heart drenching drama that there is barely a dry eye in the house by the end of the show (including the cast).
The show, Humorous, dramatical and so intense at the same time rarely misses out on a standing ovation. If you miss it, you miss out.
With plenty of deals for tickets in both the London and tour versions of Blood Brothers, it is accessible to all and really worth a look. Watch it and see why it has become one of London's longest running shows.
